Fascinating Facts about the Tomb Guard The Tomb has been under a 24-hour, 365-day guard since 1937 Since 1948, the Guard has been maintained by the 3D United States Infantry, “the Old Guard” There are three reliefs of Sentinels on duty at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier Only 20% of those who volunteer for duty at the Tomb actually make it through the rigorous training There are three different uniforms authorized for the Tomb Guard--the dress blouse, an overcoat, and a raincoat The Sentinel’s shoes are standard military issue but have been modi- fied with additional soles and clickers The Changing of the Guard ceremony is conducted on the hour dur- ing the winter months (October-March) and on the half hour during the summer (April-September) The Sentinel’s M-14 rifle is equipped with a ceremonial, chrome M- 6 bayonet The rifle is always positioned between the visitors and the Tomb to indicate the guarding function The walking sentinel takes 21-steps across the mat and then faces the Tomb for 21-seconds, indicative of the highest military salute/honor The Tomb Guard Identification Badge (TGIB) is awarded only after 9-months of duty at the Tomb after a sentinel is deemed proficient in all aspects of duty and has passed a test on cemetery knowledge The TGIB is one of the least awarded badges in the military; less than 700 have been awarded since its inception in 1958 The TGIB can be revoked at any time if a sentinel ever brings dis- honor to the Tomb, even in civilian life There have been four female sentinels at the Tomb The Relief Commanders are issuesd a commemorative 9-mm M-17 Barretta handgun
